Information
Stephen studied printmaking and painting for several years at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. He received his BA degree in fine art from Arizona State University, concentrating on architectural history and landscape architecture. Over the following decade he worked as a landscape architect in Tempe, Arizona , the principal of Stephen J. Cullen and Associates. He now works full time as an artist.
Stephen currently lives in Portland, Oregon and his work focuses on dog portraits in oil. Following the lead of the 19th century British sporting and canine portrait artists such as Stubbs, Landseer and Wardle, Stephen’s portraits are centered on the character and beauty of dogs. His intention is to create a body of work that portrays the nature and personality of dogs with the same dignity and detail that is so often reserved to the formal portraits of people.
Stephen’s paintings have been displayed in galleries in Charlotte, North Carolina, Forth Worth, Texas, Aspen, Colorado and Sedona, Arizona. His works have been in accepted at juried art shows across the country. Stephen has enjoyed participating in a number of shows as a member of Oregon Society of Artists.
